... to Robert Aickman » A Pictorial Bibliography on Friday 5 September 2008.

On this site, you'll find a chronological catalogue of the different editions and printings of the works of the late Robert Fordyce Aickman (1914-1981),  British author of strange stories as he preferred to call his disquieting creations which are so much more than just mundane "ghost stories". He was also the founder in 1946, with Tom Rolt, of the Inland Waterways Association. For more information on Aickman, visit the biography page. There is more information on the aims of this site on the about page and you can join the announcement-only mailing list here.

Please note that this site is not connected in any way with the estate of Robert Aickman, his literary executors or with the copyright holders of his works. The design and content are all my own, and as a result so too are any errors which might have crept in: I welcome any corrections, additions, suggestions, further pictures of cover artwork et cetera. It's likely the story index will need updating over time so please feel free to get in touch (brian.lavelle at aickman.com).

I am always interested in unusual Aickman items: signed/inscribed copies of books, proofs, letters, manuscripts, original photographs etc, so please email me if you have anything like this. You will find scans of some items on the letters page.

1 June 2008
It's been some time since there has been  positive Aickman related news to report but I'd like to thank Mark Valentine for pointing me to a hint that UK publisher Faber may be about to reprint Aickman. They have a new reprint series of "lost classics" - Faber Finds - and the series editor, John Seaton mentioned Aickman in an article in the Telegraph yesterday (scroll down - it's about 6 paragraphs from end). Whilst he doesn't definitely say an Aickman reprint is in the offing in this piece, that's certainly the implication.

On doing a bit of further digging, I found that it seems Faber plan to publish a  304 page paperback on 19 June 2008 entitled The Unsettled Dust.  Whether or not this will be a volume identical to that published by Mandarin almost 20 years ago remains to be confirmed.  There's nothing yet on the Faber Finds site but Amazon gives the ISBN as 0571244262.  The number of pages suggests this book will contain the same stories as the 1990 paperback.

Watch this space for more details.

In other news:

There is an excellent article by Peter Bell in issue 10 of Wormwood magazine, The Void Behind the Face of Order: Robert Aickman, Anthologist of the Ghost Story.  Peter's contribution is a detailed and thoughtful look at Aickman's contributions and, more importantly, his introductions to and the anthological skill displayed in the first eight volumes of the Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories, published between 1964 and 1972.
