I'm delighted to say that an unpublished short story by Robert Aickman will appear in the new edition of Wormwood (Issue 5, Autumn 2005). The story is entitled The Fully-Conducted Tour
and is relatively short, but apparently complete. An afterword is
provided by Glen Cavaliero. Details have been added to the story index page.

The letters
page has now been properly uploaded, with scans of a two page letter by
Robert Aickman and scans of four brief postcards. All of these items
were written in a period less than nine months before his death, when
Aickman was clearly quite seriously ill, and there is reference in a
number of the items to his condition. For all that, they reveal a
picture of a charismatic but rather lonely man, perhaps cut off from
the modern world somewhat yet desirous of contact with at least part of
it.

Locus Magazine is running the 2005
Locus All-time Fantasy Story Poll. Their listing of almost 300 titles
includes two by Aickman (Pages from a Young Girl's Journal
and The Stains) but you can also vote for unlisted
titles. Here is the description from the site:
"What is the greatest
fantasy short story of all time? Please vote for your favorite
novellas, novelettes, and short stories, published in 1995 or before,
in this special category. A selection of nearly 300 titles, drawn from
awards winners, classic anthologies, and expert recommendations, is
listed below as suggestions, but you may vote for any other titles of
your choice by using the write-in boxes at the bottom of the page."
The link to the page
is here. Thanks to Adam Walter for
encouraging me to announce this here.

The photograph which now appears on the front page of the site
has been licensed from the National Portrait Gallery in London.
It was taken during the late 1950s by noted Russian photographer,
Ida Kar. My thanks to Matthew Bailey of the Picture Library at the
NPG for his assistance.
I
have altered the manner in which cover pictures of books are presented
on the site. Each of the book pages now has thumbnails of the front
and back cover scans, where applicable and available, and larger
version of the cover picture will open in a separate window if the
thumbnail is clicked.

A page dedicated to the second German collection of Aickman's
stories, Schlaflos:
Makabre Erzählungen
published in 1992, is now available. This nicely produced volume,
which complements the
1991 German collection Glockengeläut:
Makabre Erzählungen, contains six further translations
and an 8 page Afterword, again in German.

I've now added front and back cover scans of the proof edition
of the US printing of The
Wine-Dark Sea: A Collection.

Happy new year to all. Xavier Legrand-Ferronnière has
been kind enough to send details of all Aickman's tales published
in French translation. Whilst no dedicated anthology of Aickman's
work has ever seen publication in France, eight of his strange stories
have appeared in various periodicals and anthologies since 1969.
The particular stories are: Bind
Your Hair, Ringing
the Changes, The
School Friend, Pages
from a Young Girl's Journal, The
Hospice, The
Swords, Ravissante
and Never
Visit Venice.

Thanks to Chris Ward, I've now added full details and cover
scans for the 1991 German collection Glockengeläut:
Makabre Erzählungen,
which features translations of six of Aickman's better known stories
and a 10 page Afterword (in German, of course).

I have added the bibliographical details and cover scan for Das

produced book with a number of excellent illustrations by Susanne

September 2004
I have now added to the site images of the covers of the 1968
paperback edition of Powers
of Darkness, the front of which features some rather disquieting
artwork. Does anyone have any information on the artist/designer?
I have also added the cover and full details for the first edition
of The
Late Breakfasters, full details and cover scans for The
River Runs Uphill and scans of The
Collected Strange Stories and the new edition of The
Attempted Rescue.
